What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma, also know as 'Kala Motiyabind', is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve of the eye. The optic nerve of the eye sends visual information from the eye to the brain and is crucial for proper and good vision. The high pressure in the eye is often responsible for the damage to the optic nerve but glaucoma can happen even with normal eye pressure. Glaucoma can develop in people of any age but is more common in older persons above the age of 60. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for older people.

Signs & Symptoms of Glaucoma

There are many types of Glaucoma or 'Kala Motiyabind'. The symptoms of glaucoma depend on the type and stage of Glaucoma. There are some Glaucoma that might not show symptoms in its early stage but when the disease gets detected it is already too late.

AT Tonometer

AT Tonometer is used to perform Tonometry. Tonometry is a quick and simple test that checks the pressure inside your eyes. The results can help your doctor see if you're at risk for glaucoma. The pressure inside your eye is called intraocular pressure (IOP).

Gonioscope

With the help of Gonioscope, your doctor performs a painless exam called Gonioscopy. With this test, your doctor checks a part of your eye called the drainage angle. This part is at the front of your eye between the iris and the cornea. It is where fluid called aqueous humor naturally drains out of your eye. Your ophthalmologist will perform a Gonioscopy to check to see if this drainage angle is functioning properly.

Humphrey Field Analyser (HFA)

Humphrey Field Analyser (HFA) is a tool for measuring the human visual field during eye check-up. With the visual field testing, your ophthalmologist measures how much vision you have in either eye, and how much vision loss may have occurred over time. A visual field test can determine if you have blind spots (called scotoma) in your vision and where they are. Visual field tests are especially important in the treatment of glaucoma.

NC Tonometer

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an imaging method used to generate a picture of the back of the eye, called the retina. OCT uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina. The OCT is an excellent way to visualize the different layers of the retina and optic nerve in the eye. OCT is routinely used during check-up of patients with glaucoma.

Slit Lamp

The binocular slit-lamp examination provides a stereoscopic magnified view of the eye structures in detail, enabling anatomical diagnoses to be made for a variety of eye conditions. A second, hand-held lens is used to examine the retina. A slit-lamp exam is usually done during a regular checkup with your eye doctor before the cataract surgery procedure.
