What is Cataract or motiyabind?

Cataract, colloquially called motiyabind, is a very common age-related eye disease that generally starts developing around the age of 50. It is a condition of the eye in which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, resulting in changes in vision. The natural lens of the eye helps light pass through it and focus on the back of the eye thereby producing images and helping us to see. When this natural lens becomes cloudy, it obstructs the light causing blurred vision. Cataract gradually develops and matures causing vision loss and impacts our life by interfering with everyday activities.

Get Your Vision Back with Cataract Surgery

Cataract can not be treated with eye drops or medicines or injections. Cataract can only be treated by surgery. Through the surgery the cataract affected natural lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial lens thereby restoring vision. The implanted artificial lens lasts a lifetime.

Cataract surgery is a painless and stitch-less surgical procedure. The two modern surgical procedures to treat cataract are PHACO and SICS. With advanced PHACO surgery which takes only a few minutes, the patient is discharged from the hospital on the same day within a few hours. Patients undergoing SICS surgery are supposed to stay overnight at the hospital and are released the next day morning.

Cataract Surgery can be done any time of the year, irrespective of any season. DO NOT wait for any specific time or season. Get the cataract surgery or operation done when the eye specialist or the surgeon suggests.

ATTENTION!

If you are already a patient of cataract, DO NOT delay your treatment. If cataract is left untreated, it may cause further vision loss. If the patient has cataract in both eyes and the surgery is not done within the right time, this can become the reason for complete vision loss and the patient may become blind eventually.

DO NOT listen to rumours or myths, consult Cataract Specialist Doctor.

Every eye is unique, and the requirement of lens depends on various factors. The eye surgeon can suggest to you the right lens only after examining your eye. Choosing a lens depends on existing eye conditions, expectations, lifestyle of the patient and budget.

It depends on the requirement of the patient. Monofocal lens restores only distant vision after the surgery and the patient will need glasses for reading and to focus on nearby objects. Multifocal lens restores vision at all distances, i.e. near, intermediate, and distant and reduces chances of wearing glasses after the surgery. Monofocal lenses are less costly whereas multifocal lenses are expensive.

The cost or price of cataract operation depends on the type of lens you choose, the type of surgery, doctor fees, OT charges, bed charges and cost of lens. At Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital cataract or motiyabind operation package starts from Rs. 6,000 only. The surgery package includes all expenses such as OT charges, bed charges, doctor fee, and lens cost.

No, there are various types of cataract lenses used in cataract surgery, such as Monofocal, Monofocal Toric, Multifocal, Multifocal Toric, etc. The eye specialist or the surgeon recommends the most appropriate lens to the patient considering the patient’s requirements, expectations, existing eye condition, and budget.

With advanced technologies, Indian lenses are now as good as foreign lenses. Indian lenses are less expensive while imported foreign lenses are expensive. There are certain features or benefits that an Indian lens may not have but a foreign lens may have, in that case the eye doctor or surgeon may recommend a foreign lens to the patient.

The type of lens (IOL) used for the cataract operation and the patient's existing vision conditions determine whether the patient will require glasses after cataract surgery. Monofocal lenses only restore vision at one distance, necessitating the use of glasses for all other distances. Multifocal lenses enable clear vision at all distances, i.e. near, intermediate, and distant, thereby reducing chances of wearing glasses after the surgery. Patients suffering from Astigmatism will require Toric lenses. Talk to the eye specialist to understand what the most appropriate lens for you would be.
